GAA
Cork
look to avoid relegation
There was a hectic schedule on the penultimate weekend of
the National Hurling and Football Leagues.
In Division One of the NHL the best viewing was to be seen at Páirc Ui
Chaoimh as interim manager John Considene took charge of Cork for the
final time before handing over the reigns to Denis Walsh. Last week the
Rebels had a great comeback against Clare and they knew a win against
Limerick would all but guarantee survival. This week though Cork
started the stronger, Jerry O’Connor firing home a goal after just
90seconds. Pat Tobin got a goal for Limerick on 24 minutes while Niall
Moran scored 9 points. Limerick moved 4 clear with 12 minutes to go
following a Donal O’Grady goal but Cork fought back with scores from
Ben O’Connor, Pa Cronin and Tadhg Og Murphy before Niall Ronan sent
over a stoppage time winner to secure a second late win for Cork. Cork
1-20 Limerick 2-16.
Meanwhile in Fraher Field the conditions prevented a classic encounter
as Galway easily overcame Waterford. In fact the Tribesman would have
won by more if had they not gifted the Deise two late goals. With the
winds at their back Galway only went into half time 1-08 to 0-08 points
up. But Galway plugged on in the second half building up a 9 point lead
on the hour mark. But the concession of two late Eoin Kelly gave
Waterford some pride. Waterford 2-12 Galway 1-21.
Elsewhere in Division One Kilkenny had a 13 point victory in Clare
while Tipperary survived a spirited Dublin second half come-back to
secure a 2 point victory. In Division 2 there were wins for Offaly,
Antrim and Wexford.
